Care of Plants in Bloom

As buds develop, it is best not to rotate the plant as buds will aim towards light sources. Be sure there is enough clearance between the buds and overhead obstacles such as lights. Even cool running fluorescent bulbs are warm enough to damage buds and flowers. Do not let water sit on buds or flowers. Botrytis fungus attacks wet flowers and buds, and is seen as pinhead sized brown spots on flowers. It is easily transferred between plants, so dispose of affected flowers immediately. Try to maintain fairly constant humidity and temperature to avoid bud blast. Bud blast and flower wilt is also induced by ethylene gas from ripe fruit or inefficient natural gas heaters, stoves, or ovens. Displaying plants in flower near a bowl of apples or bananas, or near gas appliances may cause flowers to fade prematurely. Temperatures in the low seventies will encourage long flower life as will slightly less light. Water thoroughly slightly more frequently to prevent plants in bud or bloom from drying out.
